Reflexology - What It Is and How to Do It on Yourself
Reflexology is a very common practice in the east, especially in Asia. It comes from the ancient Chinese healing notes and is used in a wide variety of ways to improve overall health and well being in people of all ages. I will let you know a little bit more about it, why it's important to you and how you can practice the ancient art of reflexology on yourself to improve your health.
Reflexology is a type of massage that is designed to get your body's chi or energy flowing in an efficient and effortless manner. It focuses on pressure points that are located in the hands and feet. It is done with either the knuckles or stones or tools pushing on the pressure points to get the stagnant chi flowing again and bring the body's natural homeostasis to a balanced flow.
The body has 5 meridian lines on each side stemming from the brain to the tips of the fingers and down to the tips of the toes on each side of the body. The meridian lines cannot be seen on an x-ray, but they exist and are very real. Your body's chi or energy flows through these meridian lines giving you life sustenance and energy for everyday functioning. The meridian lines connect to the different organs of the body, heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, gallbladder, stomach, bladder, liver, small and large intestines, eyes, ears, testes, ovaries. Each different part of the body has a specific connection on the meridian lines. The points all come to an end at the hands and the feet. On each hand and foot there is a map to the different organs of the body.
When the flow of chi gets blocked for whatever reason, poor diet, lack of exercise an injury or bad posture; there is stiffness and pain at the organs pressure point. When the reflexology massage is done by either a trained professional or through self massage the natural flow of chi to each body organ is restored. Bringing the body back to its natural state of ease and efficiency is the point of a reflexology massage.
Each person and body is different and will have a different reaction to the massage. Some will experience tremendous pain. Usually a sharp tight sensation that is sometimes hard to endure. Others will feel a euphoric rush like a sudden flush of positive tingling sensation through the body. Your reaction to the massage depends on the overall health and flow of chi your body has. The more blockage the more pain you will feel. It is important to continue the massage regularly if you experience pain. It is a part of life to feel sensations that's why we have them. Eventually the pain will lessen and go away giving you better overall health.
Start by using a golf ball, stand on it with one foot gently stepping on it and rolling it on all parts of the foot. When you feel pain or tightness hold the ball on that spot press into it and learn to block the pain from your senses with deep breathing. Practice this daily until it feels comfortable and good. Avoiding the pain will not help you. The body is telling you something when you feel pain it's a part of life. The more you work through it the better it will feel with regular self massage. The same technique should be practiced on each hand.
